Five years of CureforU: Global Collaboration on Rare Paediatrics

June 2026 marks five years since CureforU (a global monthly case discussion platform for rare and complex paediatric colorectal and urogenital conditions) held its first session. In that time, the initiative has brought together over 1,000 medical professionals from more than 80 countries to discuss 120 complex cases across 61 meetings, with the aim of improving medical standards in Developing Countries through West-East collaborations.

CureforU was founded by Salman Saif, drawing on personal experience of parents of children with anorectal malformations (ARM) and Hirschsprung’s disease (HD). Its monthly case discussions focus on conditions including ARM, Hirschsprung’s disease, urological and urogenital anomalies, and other complex paediatric surgical presentations.

ERN eUROGEN’s contribution to CureforU runs deep. Prof Wout Feitz, former ERN eUROGEN Coordinator, has participated in 30 sessions as a senior expert advisor, making him one of the most frequent contributors in the platform’s history. Beyond that, a significant number of ERN eUROGEN clinicians have served on the expert panel over the past five years, including Prof Marc Miserez, Prof Paola Midrio, Dr Anna Morandi, Prof Oliver Muensterer, Dr Alessio Pini Prato, Prof Ivo de Blaauw, Dr Alejandra Vilanova, Dr Francesco Fascetti-Leon, Prof Pietro Bagolan, Dr Herjan van der Steeg, Prof Stefanie Märzheuser, Dr Marieke Witvliet, Dr Raimund Stein, Prof Ernesto Leva, Dr Barbara D. Iacobelli, and Prof Alaa El-Ghoneimi. The ERN eUROGEN Coordination Team at Radboudumc has also supported the collaboration throughout.

The shared focus on rare uro-recto-genital conditions makes this a natural partnership. ERN eUROGEN’s clinical expertise, guidelines, and cross-border working complement CureforU’s model of bringing complex paediatric cases to a global expert panel for discussion and learning.

As CureforU looks ahead to its next five years, ERN eUROGEN looks forward to continuing to contribute to this global community of practice and to building further on a partnership that ultimately serves patients with some of the most complex conditions in paediatric surgery.
