EC Visit to Radboudumc: Showcasing ERN Excellence & Collaboration

In May 2026, ERN eUROGEN (rare uro-recto-genital diseases and complex conditions) and ERN GENTURIS (rare genetic tumour risk syndromes) welcomed Donata Meroni, Head of Unit at DG SANTE (European Commission), to Radboudumc for a two-day visit. The visit provided a valuable opportunity to demonstrate how both of the networks coordinated by Radboudumc advance care for patients with rare and complex conditions across Europe.

The Commission visit included open, frank exchanges and in-depth presentations that generated valuable insights into how multidisciplinary collaboration operates at both national and European levels. Radboudumc’s outstanding hospital facilities were a particular highlight, with infrastructure and operational standards reflecting a deep commitment to excellence in patient care and research.

Prof. Jan W.A. Smit (Dean, Faculty of Medical Sciences), Prof. Wendy van Zelst-Stams (Head of Genetics, Radboudumc and Dutch representative to the Board of Member States), Prof. Peter Mulders (ERN eUROGEN coordinator), Prof. Wout Feitz (former ERN eUROGEN coordinator) and Prof. Marjolijn Ligtenberg (ERN GENTURIS coordinator) showcased how both networks leverage their shared expertise to advance diagnosis, treatment and care for patients. A particular strength highlighted was the partnership with patient organisations—recognised as invaluable in driving progress and ensuring patient needs shape our work.

The visit showcased multidisciplinary expertise across pathology, genetics, and diagnostic innovation. Dr. Chella van der Post demonstrated how genetic sequencing and personalised treatment strategies enable better outcomes for patients with hereditary cancers and complex genetic conditions. A tour of Amalia Children’s Hospital, led by Dr. Jan Peter Rake, highlighted the integration of specialist medical care with psychological support and wellbeing services for paediatric patients.

As Donata Meroni noted, “Events like this reinforce the power of ERN shared expertise and pan-European cooperation—key to driving progress in rare diseases.

Both ERN eUROGEN and ERN GENTURIS are committed to improving diagnosis, treatment and care pathways for the patients we serve. Funded by the EU4Health Programme and through collaboration with fellow ERNs, patient organisations, and partner institutions, we share expertise across borders to ensure that patients across Europe have access to the specialist knowledge and coordinated care they need, wherever they live.
