ERN eUROGEN’s clinical work is organised into three Workstreams (WS), each divided into Expertise Areas* (EAs) covering the specific rare diseases and complex conditions within its scope. Each Workstream has a Workstream Lead, Clinical Lead, Education Lead, and Research Lead (the same roles that sit on the Operational Board), and each Expertise Area has its own Expertise Area Coordinator (EAC) and Vice-EAC. The WS Leads/EACs are responsible for organising the day-to-day working mechanisms of their respective groups. All subgroups are actively involved in implementing the Work Packages. The WS Leads and EACs ensure the flow of data and information within their specific group(s) and the provision of services and advice offered by ERN eUROGEN. (*Note: Two Expertise Areas, differences in sex development (EA 1.1) and transgender patient surgery (EA 2.7), relate to individual identity rather than disease or disorder. For this reason, the network refers to Expertise Areas rather than “disease areas” throughout, in line with the EU’s principles of equality, diversity, and inclusiveness.) To join ERN eUROGEN, Full Member and Affiliated Partner healthcare providers (HCPs) must show evidence of covering Expertise Areas (EAs) and that they meet the network-specific criteria related to these to ensure they have the required standards of expertise and resources to treat patients appropriately and effectively. The network has a protocol for filling gaps in and reviewing existing criteria using data from annual monitoring exercises and input from network experts and the European Patient Advocacy Group. HCPs have the opportunity to apply to expand their expertise due to, for example, staff changes or new endorsements by national health ministries. ERNs can also apply to extend their EAs to the Board of Member States for ERNs (BoMS), thereby including additional rare diseases and complex conditions. ERN eUROGEN is currently awaiting confirmation of our request to add male infertility, paediatric renal transplantation in urology, paediatric oncological urology, and rare bladder tumour surgery to our remit. Furthermore, a recent exercise was undertaken jointly between Orphanet, the BoMS, the European Commission, and the ERNs to ensure that all Orphacodes are covered by at least one ERN. As a result, ERN eUROGEN will also be incorporating rare gynaecological diseases and conditions into our existing EA structure in the near future.
