The Future of ERNs: Evaluation Report & Webinar

ERN Evaluation Results Report

The recently published ERN Evaluation Results Report – Independent Evaluations of European Reference Networks and of Healthcare Providers highlights the major achievements and future potential of European Reference Networks (ERNs) after their first five years of operation.

The report provides a comprehensive overview of the ERN system’s role in addressing rare and complex conditions across Europe. It summarizes data from 24 ERNs and 836 healthcare providers (HCPs) in 24 EU Member States and Norway, gathered through a thorough evaluation process. This included self-assessments, document reviews, ERN interviews, on-site audits, and stakeholder consultations.

By drawing on this wide range of inputs, the report underscores the ERN system’s essential contributions to improving the diagnosis, treatment, and care of rare diseases. It offers insights into the system’s structure, maturity, activities, and impact while identifying areas for growth.

Crucially, the findings pinpoint opportunities for enhancing evaluation processes and ensuring the sustainability of the ERN framework. The report emphasizes the need for targeted improvements to strengthen the network’s capacity and maintain its success in meeting the needs of patients with rare and complex conditions across Europe.

This pivotal document serves as both a reflection on the ERN system’s achievements and a roadmap for its continued evolution and growth.
